Carmel Arts & Design District Announces 2009 Events

CARMEL, Ind. — The Carmel Arts & Design District has announced its event calendar for the remainder of 2009. All events will take place within the District, located in the heart of Old Town Carmel, Ind. The District is home to interior designers, fine art galleries, showrooms, restaurants, antique stores and a variety of specialty retail shops.

April
“Art in Bloom” Gallery Walk- visit website
The merchants, galleries and restaurants of the Carmel Arts & Design District will welcome spring with a Gallery Walk on Saturday, April 18, 2009, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. During the event, area galleries will host receptions featuring works by local and international artists that showcase the beauty of spring. Galleries also will offer complimentary hors d’oeuvres and signature drinks for guests. There is no charge for admission, and the event is open to the community.

“Indy 500” Gallery Walk
The Gallery Association of the Carmel Arts & Design District will celebrate the beauty of motorsports with a racing-themed Gallery Walk on Friday, May 22, 2009, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. During the event, area galleries will host receptions featuring works by local and international artists and will offer complimentary hors d’oeuvres and signature drinks for guests.

Carmel Artomobilia - visit website
On Saturday, June 20, 2009, Old Town Carmel will race into summer with the second-annual Artomobilia – a celebration of the art and design of the automobile. From noon to 6 p.m., several city blocks will be closed to accommodate this special outdoor expo of automotive history, where the District’s many eclectic local galleries, restaurants and design houses will join with collector car owners to present a display of automotive design on wheels and on canvas. This event is free and open to the public.

July
Rock the District - visit website
On Saturday, July 11, 2009, the District will explode in sound as the summer’s hottest free concert event, Rock the District, returns to central Indiana. Drawing thousands each year, the free community-wide music festival and shopping extravaganza will take place from noon to 9 p.m. Attendees will be entertained by eight hours of music on three different stages. In addition, more than 100 specialty shops, galleries and vendors in downtown Carmel will be open to greet visitors, many with special activities, drawings and sales.

August
Carmel Art of Wine
Visit the Carmel Arts and Design District for an evening of art and culture on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Local galleries will open their doors to art- and wine-lovers alike. In addition to wine tasting and complimentary hors d’oeuvres, shops in the District will display Nebuchadnezzar wine bottles decorated by local artists.

Dog Day Afternoon - visit website
On Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009, the Carmel Arts & Design District will play host to central Indiana’s favorite furry friends and the people who love them during the “Dog Day Afternoon.” The event is a fundraiser for the Humane Society for Hamilton County and will take place from noon to 5 p.m. Activities include a puppy parade, fashion show, service dog demonstrations, micro-chipping, pet photography, dog agility shows, dog paw paintings and a silent auction. This event is free and open to the public. Pet owners are fully responsible for the behavior of their pets.

“Culinary Arts” Gallery Walk - visit website
The Gallery Association of the Carmel Arts & Design District will host a Gallery Walk on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. During the event, area galleries will host receptions featuring works by local and international artists. In addition to showcasing fine arts, the galleries will highlight the culinary arts through cooking demonstrations and will provide complimentary hors d’oeuvres and signature drinks for guests.

Carmel International Arts Festival - visit website
For one weekend, the Carmel Arts & Design District will be transformed with an international twist as the Carmel International Arts Festival takes to the streets. On Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009, and Sunday, Sept. 27, 2009, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the festival will bring more than 150 juried artists to the District on Main Street, showcasing exhibits in watercolor, oil, 2D, jewelry, photography, 3D, wood, sculpture, pottery and more. Carmel Art of Beer
The Gallery Association of the Carmel Arts & Design District will bring a taste of Oktoberfest to Old Town Carmel during the Carmel Art of Beer on Friday, Oct. 16, 2009, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. Guests are invited to receptions at local galleries featuring works by local and international artists. In addition to beer tasting, galleries also will offer complimentary hors d’oeuvres.

December
Holiday in the District
On Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, and Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009, Old Town Carmel will once again be transformed into a winter wonderland. Free festivities are planned for all ages, including visits to Santa’s house, carriage rides and opportunities to interact with a colorful cast of characters including elves, carolers and live reindeer.

On Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., art aficionados and gift-seekers alike will delight in discovering the myriad of retail options available during the Carmel Arts & Design District’s Holiday Gallery Walk. During this seasonal celebration, guests are welcomed to a District-wide open house during which galleries and merchants spotlight new original art, and treat shoppers to customized hors d’oeuvres and signature drinks that reflect the theme of each location’s unique event focus. This event is free and open to the public.
